A picture of a Dane puppy always brings a smile to my face.
Thanks Ginnie! |
I think you just need to e-mail the woman who inquired about breeding all the links to this series. It's been very enlightening to a dane owner who knew about the need to have a knowledgeable breeder, but even I learned something. Being a breeder is a huge responsibility too bad there are too many BYB and worse yet those that don't spay animals and let them breed irresponsibly and end up being destroyed.
As always thanks for a great site. Love those little puppy faces, to bad they grow so darn quickly. |
Thank you Ginnie & Cindy. Cindy actually forgot the major reason many of us breed more than once. It's a lack of sanity! I do agree with the reasons Cindy gave but I also know that every time, while waiting for pups to arrive, you repeat the emphatic decision you have made many times before, "We are never doing this again!" <Grin>
Of course there is normally a next time anyway. |
Haha, Cindy and Scot, breeding is not for the fainthearted!
I am not a glutton for punishment. Therefor, I leave the breeding adventure to hardy people like you. LOL |
I'm grinning ear to ear after seeing the pictures of the babies.
Keep up the beautiful work. |
For those of us Dane lovers in this world we are glad that someone is brave (or crazy) enough to keep the breed alive. Thank you. |
THe picture of the puppy nose to nose with the flower says it all..
THank you for sharing. I don't think those of us that do not breed have no idea the amount of work love time effort money etc etc go into this. And, only only experienced breeders should be allowed to breed this incredible dog |
Scot,
You're so RIGHT! I thought I was the only one who'd said I'd never do it again...! And we do feel crazy for doing it again, especially when the going gets tough - when you realize that brown spot under your nail is poop, and you wonder if it's yesterdays or fresh! You know, I haven't yet had the opportunity to mention one of the most important and most endearing aspects of breeding, and that is to have a wonderful, faithful, loyal, unselfish mentor like Glenn and I do. A mentor is a personal coach, and in this instance, coaches you along thru all of your breedings due to the immense knowledge base they themselves have. We have the most wonderful mentors in the world in Lorraine and Chip Rainwater, who've given unselfishly of themselves. We're blessed to know them and to be trusted and loved by them. Their BIS, BISS CH Mister Rhett Butler of VZTop is the father of these precious puppies, and was the #1 male Dane in 1999, multiple Best In Shows, and Best in Specialty shows. He was the most magnificent Dane I've ever seen, and we found him and the Rainwaters by going to dog shows to find OUR reputable breeder! Hat's off to all of those long-time breeders out there who've paved the path for the rest of us. As I've said before, their legacy will follow this breed for years to come. |
Thanks, Ginnie for the pics - adorable as usual. I'm so grateful to all those responsible breeders who do their best for the danes. I do wish the US could get up to speed on the ear cropping issue though. |
For more cute Dane puppy pics, please visit www.danerescue.net, we have a litter of 5 (one adopted) that we rescued with their momma. Not pictured on our site is a litter of 4, confiscated in a cruelty case of a BYB. They have mange so bad, we don't know what color they are. They are recovering at our vet's home and once they are healthy, those 4 will join the other 4 in looking for Dane puppy approved homes. Puppies are so much work...I just admire them from afar! |
Ginny ~
Thanks for the stories on responsible breeders! While Im sure that all of us love our Danes, being friends with the breeder of almost all of my danes gave me a true insight to the hard work, cost, and incredible devotion these people have, and through them, I have a much beloved family member! If I could have a single wish, it would be that there were no people like cristina. And while I don't mean that in a mean or cruel way, the reality is, if there none like that, there far less in rescue, abandoned because of poor breeding, irresponsible selling, and all that goes with that BackYard mentality. Well, I can dream! |
thanks for another great week of puppy pictures.. have a silly question,, are all the puppies spoken for ??????? and yes I can see why you would cringe at the person who wrote about the choc.dane... how does the general public know where to find a reputable breeder??? I have admitted before that my lovely Libby came from a byb and after reading this site for several years now,, I don't really want to take that chance again.. thanks for all the info and great shots... |
Hi Ginnie! When I saw those adorable faces, I couldn't help but smile. A big THANK YOU to all the responsible breeders, who do their part to ensure the integrity of this noble breed for years to come. Take care. |
I love the puppy faces!!! I am so glad for the fantastic breeders out there. I always keep track of what my favourite breeders are doing, and am happy to give out their numbers or the numbers of rescues.
How can anyone who has just purchased their first pup, and so obviously knows nothing about the breed say they are going to breed a pup of dubious origin and produce a litter with a dubious future?!! I feel sorry for that little girl and her future pups. Bubble is my fifth Dane, from champion parents, and she is fixed. I realised that not only do I not yet have the stomach or money to breed, but I don't have the patience for it either (especially the showing! She was spayed before a year old.). Maybe one day. Susan, Jenny, Bubble and gang |
Hi Ginnie, We are so like Janet in that our beautiful Beauregard was purchased from a caring but perhaps not all that responsible breeder. Now of course thanks to you and all of your contributors we know better. But we got lucky and Beau blessed our lives for 10 plus years Our hearts are only now just begining to heal. We realize that having a dane 'completes us and so we plan to begin our search for another soon. Our question is...is there a place on the net or article that we can read that deals with the pros andcons of adopting through a resue. We would love to do this as I have been reading incredible stories and we feel like we have alot to offer another dane. However our hearts were absolutely shattered and although we know that nothing is really guaranteed we're not sure we could go through another loss too quickly. The choc. dane story makes me physically sick and my hope is that some compassionate, knowledgable person will take the time and help out this wayward owner and perhaps save the life of a few danes. As always I join in the many and thank you for all you do for this amazingly human-like breed. |
Ginnie - thanks for the great series. I got my first dog when I was an adult and she was a Dane that was given to me. I was soo fortunate with this wonderfuld Dane. I have learned soo much from your columns/series. please post a summary of the reply to the girl who wants to breed her chocolate lab. thanks. |
First things first: Cindy and Glen, Thank you for giving me "My Best Friend" - Cyrus! I don't think there's a better Dane in the whole world (and that says something about you, as breeders). Also, congratulations on these three little angels! They are beautiful!
And to Ginnie - thanks for the great series on these pups! |
In response to Janets question...Yep! The pups were all spoken for prior to the breeding. To be honest, I had quite a few terrific homes that I had to place a disappointing phone call to when there were only three pups born.
Most of your good breeders will have a waiting list of people with the patience to not rush out and impulsively buy a cute face. Where to go to find a reputable breeder????? Several suggestions here: Ginnie Saunders. Ginnie is extremely well respected in the Dane community, and knows many reputable breeders in different areas of the country, or will refer you to someone who does. Jill Swedlow: Jill wrote the best book ever written on Danes "The Model of Nobility", and as Ginnie, she's a wonderful reference source Great Dane Club of America website has a general list of breeders in different states. Local dog shows, where you casually walk around and chat with Dane owners NOT confessing that you're looking for a pup, but asking the owners about their opinion on health-testing, and questions that will tell you what you need to know. A good and reputable breeder will always be happy to refer you to another breeder who may have an upcoming litter if they themselves don't, but be prepared to be interviewed thoroughly! And expect a wait. As we all know, that perfect puppy is worth every second you waited. |
thanks for the info,, and yes I was pretty sure the pups were spoken for but ........ya never know !!!!!!!
I don't mind the wait as you said the perfect pup is WORTH the wait.. and I'm sure there is a reputable breeder in my area,, will just have to research to find them ... once again thanks... |

and your imformation of dane, great too!! have a nice day!! ^^ p.s:sorry, my pool English..-_-;; from; South Korea... |
Hi,
I like the articles about the Danes giving birth and raising the pups. However, for the pups' sakes, I hope you stop breeding so you never feel the urge to crop their ears. This is a painful and unecessary practice. It is illegal to do this in Victoria, Australia (where I live) as is tail cropping. I own a great Dane and I absolutely adore her ears - all floppy and perfect. regards shez |
