Meet Rosa and Pontchartrain, aka "Train." They are double cousins and they come out of one of my favorite harlequin kennels, Almostafarm. Their parents were brother and sister, and at the same time both of their fathers and both their mothers shared the same sire, Amherst-Harlwood Bubba Rondo. Bubba happens to be father to my own two Great Danes, so perhaps I am biased because I definitely like these two Danes!
Rosa and Train were linebred. Linebreeding, which involves pairings among close relatives, is practiced by knowledgeable breeders in order to establish a breeding line with predictable (desired) traits. Breeding Great Danes, and especially harlequins, is tricky business because the genetics can get very complicated. For a glimpse into linebreeding, you can view Rosa and Train's pedigrees at Almostafarm's website. You'll also be able to see lots of photos of Train and Rosa, as well as photos of some of their close relatives including their son (Athos), Train's mother (Pinky) and his grandmother on his mother's side (Maggie) who also happens to be Rosa's grandmother on her father's side. You still with me? (Don't even ask about their great grandparents!)
This is Rosa's second appearance on DaDane of DaWeek. She was born in Argentina. If you would like to read about her arrival in the United States, click here.
